- Events have become a pivotal component of destination management and marketing strategies, acting as an economic stimulus and a destination brand builder. These benefits are further amplified when the event is deemed a ‘periodic hallmark event’, characterised by its traditions, attractiveness, associated imagery, and publicity levels. This research examines periodic hallmark events in Bangladesh, specifically industrial events that have become synonymous with Bangladeshi production and manufacturing industries. The research addresses the question, ‘How do periodic hallmark industrial event (PHIE) experiencescapes contribute to the formation of destination image and behaviour intentions of event consumers?’ By first establishing the various dimensions of what constitutes a PHIE experiencescape, the study moves on to investigate how these event experiences influence international exhibitors in terms of (i) their wider perceptions of the host destination as a place to visit and (ii) their future leisure and investment related behaviours in that destination. The study presents an innovative conceptual framework that integrates the Stimulus-Organism-Response paradigm with the concept of experiencescape and does so in a unique PHIE context. The study conducts semi-structured interviews with 25 international PHIE exhibitors and 16 PHIE organisers in Bangladesh, employing a qualitative case study approach to obtain a multi-faceted view of the PHIE experience. The interviews aimed to capture the organisers' view on designing PHIE experiences and the actual experiences of international exhibitors to paint a more comprehensive picture of the PHIE. The research findings underwent refinement through member checking involving 5 re-interviews and a presentation in a stakeholders’ meeting with 13 policy makers to ensure credibility. These processes provided a measure of data triangulation and informed the development of a multi-dimensional model encompassing event, destination, and industry aspects. The research uncovers three layers of experiential stimuli – event-related, destination-related, and industry-related – that overlap and synthesise to form the experiencescape and collectively influence the perception of international exhibitors towards the host destination. Whilst specific to Bangladesh, the findings highlight that a positive PHIE experience among international exhibitors can transfer to favourable image formation of the wider destination being visited. In particular, the unique industry experience component of a PHIE, termed ‘industrialscape’, is a key factor in framing PHIE exhibitors’ perceptions of the host country’s industry, consequently impacting PHIE’s destination image. Furthermore, this modified destination image (proposed as PHIE destination image) has the potential to influence certain future behaviours, including exhibitors’ intention to (i) revisit the event, (ii) return to the destination; (iii) and invest in the host country. The findings hold significant value for various stakeholders in Bangladesh’s tourism industry, including government and policy-making representatives. The insights gathered from this study are instrumental for PHIE organisers, practitioners, and policymakers and will guide more effective resource allocation if a positive destination image and future behaviours of international PHIE exhibitors are considered priority outcomes. Through the advancement of theory on events and destination image, this research also empowers host governments to tailor destination experiences to optimise the economic benefits of hosting PHIEs.
